Maybe it’s an old wives’ tale, but it’s been a longstanding tradition in my house, since I first had a pet as an adult.
The tradition says that domesticated animals can be offered the gift of speech at midnight on Christmas eve, and the tradition also says it is bad luck to hear them conversing. So, the rest of the tradition says you should bribe your pets with a special treat near midnight on Christmas eve, something they don’t get other times, to ask them not to accept the gift of speech.
All the years I’ve done this, my cats have never spoken anything but “cat”, so I’m going on with the tradition. MaChatte thinks I should too, and what pet wouldn’t like a special treat, anytime?
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Blessed Yule or whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year, as the wheel of the year turns on toward spring.
MaChatte just says bring on the treat!
Wishing you happy holidays, my dear friends! Mr. Bowie says “Meow!”
And the same to you Herman. And Meow from MaChatte.
My best friend believes this tradition of the animals talking at midnight. She goes up to the barn at midnight to hear them. It’s a beautiful story, wow!
McChatte can’t talk because his mouth is full haha!
Maybe it’s not bad luck like the tradition says then Sam, but MaChatte says it’s a good idea, so I’ll stick with it. Maybe you’ll give yours a special treat now…….Christmas Peace to you and Michael.
Happy holidays 🙂
And the same back to you, Marc-Andre!
Thank you ❤
How interesting! I have never heard of this tradition before. I’ll have to start a tradition of my own. >^..^< Happy Holidays! 😀
No cat you ever have will ever complain Jackie, tradition or not. 🙂 Happy Holidays to you too!
Reblogged this on Sarasin's thoughts……. and commented:
