Garden stuff, a little trip and Geyri’s Hatch Day!

I’ve been lax on blogging, so I’ll combine a few things. It was dry and sooo hot for several weeks and the garden required watering every day. Things have been doing well with that: tomatoes on all the plants, lots of sweet and hot peppers, cucumbers now, and lima bean flowers.

Then last night……………….yesss.

That will help things grow; not just my tiny garden but the fields of crops all around this area. It looks cool and refreshing in the rain gauge and it felt that way early this morning too.

I love to grow beans. Growing any plant is some kind of magic but beans are special to me. These are King of the Garden lima beans. They will go up 7′ but I teach them to go over, across wires, at 5′, because I’m not 7′ tall.

I just came back from a short trip. Every summer I go to Lancaster County and spend a couple days in Amish country.

I stay in a wonderful bed and breakfast inn and they treat their guests so well. There’s good food, peace and quiet and such a laid back atmosphere. I came back recharged after just a few days there.

I’m watching technology in progress with a situation there. Last year, this phone booth still had a working phone in it. Now, it just holds up a sign.

My dear little girl Geyri, the Saharan uromastyx, has a birthday on 6/28. We call them the hatch day. Tomorrow she will be 5 years old. She’s considered an adult now and will grow a small amount more, but nothing appreciable. She’s the sweetest little lizard, a gentle soul who just walks around in her little desert, climbs up in her dead trees, and sleeps in her favorite cave. Her favorite kinds of days are the days when we have dandelions to eat.

She was produced by a breeder in Colorado but her parents were wild caught in the Sahara. As lizard keepers, it is our responsibility to make our lizards’ living conditions as close to their natural surroundings as we can. She lives in a nice 5′ lizard condo where the sand and stone substrate, temperature and humidity are all just right. I think she’s a happy girl, and I’m so happy to have her and care for her, having learned my lessons with lots of research.

Happy Hatch Day to Geyri! (She doesn’t have a clue, of course, but I do.)

    • She would say thanks but she doesn’t even have a clue, bless her little heart. She just knew she got a couple kinds of special treats all on the same day.

      • She seems like someone who should not be underestimated. She might know it is was her Hatch Day. She might know . . . everything!

      • Well, hopefully, she does not know enough about everything to be distressed about it, but just enough to be happy about her Hatch Day and all the goodies that come with it.

      • They don’t watch the news. πŸ˜‰. She says it’s a good day when she has good food and no predators, and a better day if that food includes flowers. 🌼🌺🌸

  1. Happy Birthday Geyril!
Wonderful to see bits of your growing garden. The rain definitely helps.
Cucumbers already! we have too many male flowers and not enough female flowers, hopefully will see some cucumbers soon.
I have never grown beans. Is it too late to start from seeds?

    • Mmm, probably too late for this year, yes. The seeds need specific temps to germinate and it’s probably already too hot. Beans are the easiest thing in the world to grow, so you should plant some, next year!. Not enough female flowers…..maybe the plant is not mature enough yet? They need to get some size to support forming and developing fruit. Good luck, I hope you’ll soon have lots of cucumbers. πŸ™‚

  2. Happy belated hatch day, Geyri. She certainly is a sweet soul. I adore that cute face and the little skin folds. Kissing her in my mind πŸ₯°

    • She is just adorable. I miss her in the winter but it’s her custom to brumate for 3 or 4 months. So I enjoy her more in the other months.
